PureSpectral · Developing passive radar

See drones.
Stay invisible.

PureSpectral is developing a receive-only passive radar for low-altitude drone detection. It uses signals that existing cellular networks already transmit — no dedicated transmitter, no new spectrum. Built in Finland for European critical infrastructure and defence.

The low-altitude gap

Small, low-flying drones are hard to cover with today's sensors alone.

Recurring drone and airspace incidents have increased the focus on layered low-altitude surveillance across Northern and Eastern Europe. Each existing sensor type covers part of the problem; wide-area, persistent coverage at low altitude remains costly to scale.

Active radar

Proven detection and tracking.

Emits a signal of its own; costly to scale densely at low altitude.

RF signal detection

Low-cost and passive.

Relies on the drone's own transmissions — blind to RF-silent and autonomous platforms.

Optical & acoustic

Strong for classification and confirmation.

Line-of-sight, weather- and range-limited; deployed site by site.

30 — 500 m
altitude band — our initial operational focus
PureSpectral

A passive sensing layer built on signals that already exist.

PureSpectral uses existing cellular downlink signals to create a passive sensing layer for low-altitude airspace. The sensor adds no dedicated RF transmission and requires no additional spectrum licence. Initial operational focus: low-altitude operations, approximately 30–500 m above ground. The same node is designed to also use broadcast signals (FM, DVB-T, DAB) as a backup illuminator.

Passive

No dedicated RF transmission from the sensor.

A receive-only sensor reduces its own emission signature and removes reliance on a dedicated radar transmitter.

Scalable

Coverage potential grows with suitable sites and illuminators.

Coverage potential increases with the density and diversity of suitable cellular illuminators and sensor sites.

Sovereign

European control of core IP as a design priority.

European control of core IP and supply-chain resilience are design priorities — aimed at reducing exposure to non-EU export restrictions.

What we are building

A receive-only sensing node, designed for repeatable deployment.

Receive-only node

No transmitter.

A passive receiver with its own antenna and processing, intended for deployment at or near existing cellular sites.

Repeatable by design

Common node architecture.

Designed to reduce site-specific integration and calibration work, so that the same node can be deployed across heterogeneous sites.

Network-independent

No changes to the mobile network.

Designed for independence from any specific base-station vendor or network generation. Current proof-of-concept work focuses on commercial LTE downlink signals.

Integration by intent. Detections are intended to feed existing C-UAS, security-operations and command-and-control systems through standard interfaces. Additional passive modes on the same node are on the roadmap. Detailed signal-processing methods and hardware design choices are discussed under NDA.
Intended operating environments

Where a passive sensing layer could operate.

Border security

ThreatCross-border drone incursions for surveillance, contraband, sabotage.
DeployNodes could be deployed at suitable existing sites along the border region.
OutcomeIntended to provide persistent low-altitude coverage using existing infrastructure where suitable.

Defense installations

ThreatReconnaissance and one-way attack drones over bases, ranges, depots.
DeployNodes could be deployed and operated under a national-security framework.
OutcomeIntended as an additional detection layer feeding existing C-UAS systems.

Airports & aviation

ThreatDrone incursions on approach paths and runways. NIS2-regulated.
DeployNodes could be deployed at suitable sites around the airport perimeter.
OutcomeIntended to extend low-altitude detection beyond the controlled-airspace boundary.

Critical infrastructure

ThreatReconnaissance and sabotage of pipelines, substations, terminals.
DeployCustomer-hosted or operator-hosted, depending on site access.
OutcomeIntended to support NIS2 / CER-related monitoring using existing sites.
For mobile operators and site owners

Existing sites. A new sensing layer.

Operators and site owners already have the sites, power and backhaul. PureSpectral is exploring infrastructure-access partnerships in which a passive receiver is hosted at selected sites. Commercial models — including hosting arrangements or shared revenue from sensing services — are part of ongoing partner discovery.

No new spectrum

Receive-only. No changes to the network, no service impact, no new licensing.

Site suitability first

Site suitability and commercial accessibility are the focus of current discovery.

Early partners shape the model

Deployment and hosting models are developed together with the first infrastructure partners.

For defence and border security

An additional detection layer — not a replacement.

PureSpectral is intended as a feeder sensor in a layered architecture: an additional, receive-only detection layer for low-altitude airspace. It does not replace active radar or effectors.

No transmissions of its own

The sensor adds no dedicated RF transmission.

Independent of target emissions

Designed to detect targets regardless of whether they emit RF — complementing RF-detection systems.

Layer, don't replace

Integration into existing C-UAS and command-and-control systems through standard interfaces is a design goal.
